What is an immediate dental implant?

  • An immediate dental implant procedure, which is also known as a same-day dental implant method provides the patient with an immediate dental implant loading on the same dental visit in which the damaged tooth is extracted.

  • The idea of using an immediate dental implant is to reduce the number of visits that are required for conventional dental implants, so the patient can receive quicker results.

  •  On the other hand, not everyone is qualified for a same-day dental implant. People who have thin gum or jawbone or suffer from asymmetric gingival are advised to perform delayed dental implants.

  •  Additionally, in case of damaged tooth extraction is done with severe trauma due to gum disease or bad oral health, the patient has to wait until his gum gets healed to avoid any possible infection.

How do same-day dental implants work?

Generally, the stages of immediate dental implant do not differ from the conventional or delayed implant ones, except the timing of implant placement which is done immediately on the same day of a dental visit.

  • Firstly, the damaged tooth is extracted, leaving a socket that requires good preparation for dental implant placement. The implant is a threaded screw-shaped post that will immediately replace the tooth's root following tooth extraction. On the contrary, the conventional dental implant remains several weeks to get healed and osseointegrate with the jawbone.

  • In the next step, as in the delayed dental implant, an abutment is placed on the dental implant. Then, a temporary crown (artificial tooth) will be attached to the abutment until the permanent crown that is customized and designed in the lab is ready for placement.

  • Once the artificial tooth is available and the gums heal, the permanent crown will be attached to the abutment.

Immediate dental implant benefits

An immediate dental implant procedure can offer:

Immediate dental implant usually is performed for patients who have thick jawbone and do not need bone grafting which is considered a serious surgical intervention. Placing dental implants immediately can reduce the risk of more surgical interventions to handle possible complications, such as tissue loss that may occur during those several dental visits.

Since an immediate dental implant can be placed on the jawbone the same day the tooth removal is done, there is no need for those several visits usually required for a conventional dental implant. Therefore, the patient will save time by reducing the number of office visits.

Since the immediate dental implant procedure is a simple one-stage technique that can ensure quicker results, patients will feel more satisfied with it rather than the conventional dental implant that usually takes a longer time.

Are immediate dental implants safe?

Of course, it is safe. However, having a successful procedure depends basically on the recovery process. The most crucial aspect of a successful treatment is ensuring that the implants are completely fused with the jawbone. Therefore, the patient should follow some necessary instructions during the first 3 to 6 months after the procedure to ensure a full recovery.

Above all, he should avoid biting solid foods to prevent shifting his dental implants, which could result in implant failure.
